The POLA Research Institute of Beauty and Culture was founded in 1976 to understand and academically search for cosmetics as a culture of beauty. Since its founding, the Institute has collected resources and conducted research on cosmetics culture from ancient to modern times, centering on Japan and Europe. We have obtained about 6,500 cosmetic tools and accessories and 16,000 documents, all valuable resources obtained for research. We are sharing the knowledge we have gathered through cultural assets and research widely with the public through exhibitions, online seminars, printed materials, research reports, and more.

In 2020 we held an exhibition in cooperation with the Maison de la culture du Japon a Paris (MCJP) entitled Secrets de beaute (Secrets of Beauty–Fashion and Make-up of Edo Beauties Seen in Ukiyo-e Prints). Around 150 ukiyo-e prints and 60 makeup tools carefully selected from the collection were exhibited, under the theme of "Makeup Customs of the Edo Period." The exhibition was France's first attempt to comprehensively exhibit ukiyo-e and makeup tools from the perspective of makeup culture, and attracted a great deal of attention.
We also published the book Heisei biyo kaika: Heisei kara Reiwa e, biyo no kiseki 30-nen (translated loosely as "The Heisei Beauty Revolution - A 30-Year History of Beauty from Heisei to Reiwa").
The book summarizes makeup and beauty during the 30 years of the Heisei era, during which people's awareness, behavior and values changed dramatically.
We also conduct surveys on modern women's awareness and behavior in relation to makeup, disseminate information on websites and social media platforms, and publish information on makeup culture in various forms.
