POLA Foundation for the Promotion of Traditional Japanese Culture

Traditional Japanese Culture into the Future

摜

The POLA Foundation for the Promotion of Traditional Japanese Culture was established on the occasion of the 50th anniversary (1979) of POLA's founding as a way to contribute to building an abundant society and improving culture, based on our founder's vision that "true beauty can only be realized in combination with inner beauty and spiritual abundance." In 2011, it became a public interest incorporated foundation, engaging in the preservation, passing on, and promotion of excellent traditional craftsmanship, traditional performing arts, folk entertainment, and other expressions of intangible traditional culture in Japan.

Activities

Giving Public Recognition

The precious traditional culture cultivated by the Japanese climate has ceaselessly been passed on from age to age, person to person. We identify those who have supported this intangible tradition in the fields of traditional craftsmanship, traditional performing arts, and folk entertainment and events, and recognize them with the POLA Award for Traditional Japanese Culture.

Providing Assistance

We provide auxiliary support for promising projects that have to do with the preservation or passing on of Japanese intangible traditional culture, such as traditional craftsmanship, traditional performing arts, and folk entertainment and events.

Creating Preservation Records

The preeminent techniques of human treasures as well as the folk entertainment and events passed down in local communities are speaking to us from across the ages. We video record such excellent intangible traditional culture to create series like "Masters of Traditional Craftsmanship," "The Sophistication of Traditional Performing Arts," and "The Heart of Folk Entertainment." Our work has been warmly welcomed in many fields.

Other Projects (Dissemination, Collecting and Preserving Artworks)

Japan's excellent traditional culture is our shared heritage, which we can proudly present to the world. The Foundation is carrying out a range of cultural PR activities, including 1) video record screenings, 2) free-of-charge lending of video records, 3) the publication of our magazine Dento to Bunka (Tradition and Culture), 4) workshops for the next generation, 5) experiential classes for overseas students, and 6) other events in collaboration with universities, to increase the number of people thinking about traditional Japanese culture.
