Product Life Cycles

POLA ORBIS Group works to reduce our environmental impact through our supply chains, from raw materials to disposal.

ポーラ・オルビスグループ プロダクトライフサイクル

1) R&D

We conduct product development that keeps down the environmental impact of the entire life cycle, from product procurement to disposal and recycling.

Contents eco standard

As part of our thorough environmental response, we apply a voluntary standard on the following ingredients, in accordance with the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act and industrial voluntary standards.

  1. Substances classified as environmental hormones
  2. Animal- and plant-derived ingredients that risk resource depletion
  3. Ingredients subject to the PRTR Act
  4. Fluorocarbons that impact the atmosphere and the ozone layer
  5. Non-biodegradable ingredients

3) Production

• Production at an ISO14001-certified plant

The Fukuroi Plant of POLA CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, which mainly produces the Group's products, obtained ISO14001 certification in 2000.
The plant has reduced their environmental impact and conducted environmental communication with local communities. There has been no environmental law violation at the plant until now.

4) Offices

Each employee came up with and implemented ways to reduce their environmental impact through paperless meetings and our CSR month as well as saving resources and conserving electricity.

5) Distribution

• Fewer redeliveries at ORBIS

A high percentage of ORBIS sales are by mail order, so they increased the rate of products delivered to mailboxes as a way to reduce the number of redeliveries, which has become a social problem. As a result, redeliveries went down by about 20,000 and their environmental impact has been reduced.

6) Sales

• Reducing paper bags

ORBIS has introduced an ECO point system for customers who do not need paper bags. This reduced the use of paper, which comes from forest resources.

• Reduced impact through the web

ORBIS has reduced paper use and CO2 emissions by switching to accepting orders online. They also use FSC-certified paper, which comes from appropriately managed forest lumber.

7) Use

• Promoting long-time use through refills

Since 1995, POLA has been selling refills for high-prestige products costing more than 20,000 yen, ensuring compatibility between design and environmental response.

• Monitoring water usage

The use of POLA products comes with a water usage of about 12 liters a day (morning wash, evening cleansing and wash). We will work to reduce our environmental impact by monitoring it throughout Product Life Cycles.

8) Disposal and collection

• Container and packaging eco standard

In accordance with the Group's eco standard for containers and packaging, we are working to design containers for easy recycling and reuse in consideration of the environment at disposal.

• Container collection

Jurlique collects used containers. They are working together with customers to help the environment by giving 10% off on the next purchase when returning containers to the concept stores.

Container and packaging eco standard

We are working to become more eco-friendly in accordance with the following four fundamental ideas.

  1. Promote products that can be renewed or refilled to increase container reuse
  2. Reduce volumes and weights by making containers lighter and simpler
  3. Select container shapes and materials that are easy to recycle
  4. Select raw materials taking consideration into resource depletion
